8:21 pm - A Build Your Own Game seminar and more

vortexofchaos

So you want to learn how to write a LARP? Maybe you've been thinking about it, but you didn't want to do it by yourself? Perhaps you just didn't know how to get started? Or, you've written a LARP or three and just want to get a different perspective on the writing process.

Have I got the opportunity for you.

Join me July 20-22, at the Chelmsford Radisson, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. I'll be speaking on Friday about how to write a LARP. On Saturday, I'll be facilitating another Build Your Own Game effort, where a bunch of people will get together to write a game in 24 hours. There will be other panels about LARP as part of the New England LARP Conference 2012, but the writing is where the challenge will be - so sign up now!

If you don't want to write, we're looking for proposals for workshops and panels. Let's talk LARP!

10:27 am - Isles seeks PCs and NPCs for May 20-22 event

medievalbooks
You are invited to join the opening season of the Second Campaign in the setting of THE ISLES!

We are seeking PC' s and NPC’s May 20-22nd
at Ye Olde Commons in Charlton.

After a successful 5 year campaign known as "The Isles - Asylum", we now bring you the next
chapter in the story : "The Isles - Purgatory Station".

The Asylum Campaign concluded in the Fall of 2010, with the colonists of the Imperial Colony
of New Avinnia defeating madman who was set on destruction of the new colony.

Among the true flowers that sprang from the colony of New Avinnia was the fledgling
New Avinnia and Western Railroad. Created entirely by players in game, and exclusive of any
direction by plot or staff, the next chapter of the story takes place at the far end of the railroad.

It is 70 years after the Battle of New Avinnia, and the railroad has reached out of the
valley where the story began. The far end of the line is a settlement known as Purgatory Station.
While civilized compared to where the original story took place, the area around
Purgatory Station is the "new frontier" on the Isle of Asylum. New discoveries await those
who are brave enough to venture out and take the challenge of expanding the Empire.

8:19 pm - Seeking WyrdCon academic book submissions

dicemistress
Following the success of last year's convention and academic program we're preparing for this year's convention. Just like last year, in addition to various games and events there is an academic portion featuring various interactive theater theorists, critics, craftsman and designers who will explain their art and demonstrate their creations in both interactive panels and hands-on workshops. As a part of this event we're again soliciting for articles for a PDF book that we'll be putting out in conjunction with this academic portion. This PDF book will be comprised of articles, essays and other written works revolving around the summit's theme "Convergence of Interactive Theater."

Interactive Theater is the concept where the audience and actors are both part of the performance and are commonly one and the same. Activities such as Live Action Role Playing, also known as LARP, is one such theater concept having been around for decades. Others such as ARGs (also known as Alternate Reality Games) or even Live Simulations are also included in this definition.

Article authors are welcome from all styles and genres of interactive theater, both veteran and new individuals and no matter where they live. We want to capture interactive theater in as many of its different forms as we can. If you are interested in contributing to this publication please have your article in no later than April 20, 2010. All contributors who have their articles published will be sent a copy of the PDF whether they attend the convention or not and before it's released to the general public post convention via the web.

If you want more information on WyrdCon or want to find out how to participate as a summit panelist/presenter please contact the convention organizers here: http://wyrdcon.com/wp/contact-us/.

If you'd like to see what last year's book looked like, you can download a copy here: http://www.mortalisrpg.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=6.

Submission Guidelines can be found here: http://wyrdcon.com/wp/vendors-designers/academic-submissions/. There have been some minor changes in the guidelines from last year.

Submission Deadline: April 20, 2011

Please send your submissions, questions or other summit book related inquiries to summit@mortalisrpg.com.

Thanks,
- Amber E.

11:46 am - Annoying Spam

traceroo
Hi LARP Fans!

As you may have noticed, our community has recently been the target of serial spammers. In Russian. Boy, is this annoying to you and me, both! At first I attempted to combat this by changing the settings for our community such that only members can post, which was itself a bummer. Now, after continued Russian wedding spamming, whatever that was, I've decided to change community membership to require moderator approval. Yes, this totally hugs it. With any luck, however, this may be a temporary measure until the Russian Spamming I Want To Annoy LARPers Mafia moves on. Then maybe in the future I can turn off the moderation requirement, and we can go back to our regularly scheduled near total lack of discussion except for dicemistress's regular stream of interesting articles. ;)

Meanwhile, hope everyone enjoyed a great 2010 LARP season as many of you are winding down events before the onset of winter. Here in Colorado in the United States, apparently my local game runs all winter. In the Rocky Mountains. In the snow. Yes, they're totally nuts! The scenery sure is amazing, however -- and with all LARP games, the company can't be beat! Looking forward to next year both in LARP, and hopefully with a little more discussion in this community not about Russian mail order brides.

Take care,
Traceroo

11:13 am - Virtual Garage Sale

dicemistress
In light of a recent move, I've decided it's time to sell off stuff I've not worn or used that I've found while packing and unpacking and let those items go to people who will use or have a need for them.

There's a variety of things up for sale: neo-medieval/gothic style dresses and clubwear to some very nice gowns to LARP gear/Renaissance wear to some gaming stuff and other miscellaneous items. I've also got some additional items I'll be adding to the listings in a few days.

Folks who are local to King County, WA, I will happily arrange to meet up with to drop stuff off. If you don't live in King County I may be willing to travel and are more than willing to ship via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation, however I'll only ship within the US (sorry international people). Cash and PayPal are the only forms of payment accepted.

If you have a question about an item or want to get a particular item, please use the "Email this Person" link at the bottom of the item's listing to email me. Requests from other sources/not coming from the "Email this Person" link on each item's listing will be ignored.

More info and links to the listings are at http://www.mortalisrpg.com/VGS/

dicemistress
he latest article entitled LARP at Play: Doing your Homework, part 3 is up at the Mortalis Games site. This is the last in a three part series of articles exploring what kind of research or homework should be done at various stages of LARP involvement.

I'd like to apologize for the tardiness of this article. I recently suffered a hard drive failure and have been restoring everything from back-ups and that means redoing lost work and that is what has happened here. The next article will be from a guest columnist, Mr. Mike Young, on Young's Law. Look for that next Friday as we resume our standard publication schedule.
